It’s common knowledge that lightning can cause problems by being outside, however, did you know that you can still be in danger inside as well? Lightning can still enter structures by a direct strike, through wires or pipes that are also exposed outside or through the ground. Then, lightning can travel through electrical wiring, phones, plumbing, radio and television reception systems and even through metal wires and bars that exist in concrete walls or floors. Below are ways to stay safe inside when thunderstorms are producing lightning in your area:
  • Avoid corded phones, but cell phones and cordless phones are okay to use.
  • Avoid touching electronics directly, stick with using remote controls. This includes computers, televisions or electrical cords in general.
  • Avoid plumbing. Do not wash your hands, shower or wash dishes.
  • Avoid exterior windows and doors that contain metal that extend from outside to inside.
  • Avoid standing outside on balconies, porches or in open garages or car ports.
  • Avoid concrete walls and floors.
  • Remember to protect your pets as well: bring pets inside as dog houses are not safe shelters and chained dogs are also vulnerable to lightning strikes.
  • Do not unplug equipment during a storm as you will still be at risk of being struck. Lightning can still damage equipment even from a distance as it can generate an electric surge and typical surge protectors will not protect electronics from a lightning strike.
Knowing these tips will ensure that your family and furry friends will be safe when severe weather hits your area.
