An upper-level disturbance had enough instability to generate small hail within the more robust shower and storm activity in central California on Monday.
Scattered thunderstorms moved across California’s Central Valley and foothills on December 5, bringing lightning, rain, and hail to the region.
Thanks to very cold air aloft, storms were able to grow tall enough for pea-sized hail to develop. During the winter months, dips in the jet stream reach far enough south for more dynamic storms to move across California, so thunderstorms containing small hail are not all that uncommon despite the calendar reading December.
