Video: Heavy Rains Push North Carolina 's Watauga River Over Its Banks

The Watauga River overflowed onto the roadways Friday as a result of heavy rain this past week.

The Watauga River near the Blue Ridge Mountains in northwestern North Carolina overflowed onto the roadway on August 3 due to heavy rainfall in the area. Up to 4 inches has fallen in localized areas over the past 24 hours. 

The National Weather Service extended a flash flood warning for Watauga County, among other northwestern counties, in a statement on August 3. Drivers were warned to stay off flooded roadways.

Rain was expected all day on August 3 and a flash flood watch was issued for central North Carolina, according to local weather reports.
