Roads remained closed on December 8 in parts of New Zealand’s South island after days of heavy flooding. Timaru District Council reported that cleanup teams would work through the night to clear Inland Route 72 near the Upper Rangitata Bridge.
They shared this video showing swamped stretches of the road near Arundel on that date. All other routes were also closed, making the river impassable.
On December 7, a large chunk of cliff face collapsed into the Rangitata River and the incident was captured on video.
Thunderstorm watches were in place for parts of the North and South Islands on December 8 as stormy conditions continued.
