The upcoming weekend will bring bitterly cold air to the East, but the weather will remain largely quiet across much of the nation.
Saturday
Most of the active weather will be confined to Florida on Saturday while spots of snow dot the nation elsewhere.
A potent cold front sagging south across the Florida Peninsula will trigger scattered showers with a few thunderstorms possible with daytime heating across South Florida. There will be a large range in temperatures with 70s in Miami, but only chilly 40s up in Jacksonville, Fla.
Further north, a bit of morning snow will depart the Mid-Atlantic Coast while flakes will fly throughout the day for the Great Lakes and northern Plains. Any snow will be light. Highs will only reach the teens and 20s in the Upper Midwest, Great Lakes and Northeast with 30s and 40s in the Mid-Atlantic, Southeast, Midwest, Plains and Mountain West.
Across the West, an upper-level disturbance may trigger rain and mountain snow showers in the Southwest while Santa Ana winds are expected in southern California. Temperatures will reach the 50s and 60s across the West Coast.
Sunday
Sunday will be even quieter than Saturday with mild temperatures making a return to the Plains.
The East will remain cold Sunday, but dry weather will be in the forecast. High temperatures will range from the 20s and 30s in the Northeast to the 40s and 50s in the Southeast with only South Florida enjoying the warm 70s.
Dry weather will also be found in the southern and central Plains with 40s and 50s pushing north. Similar temperatures will be found across the Great Basin with plentiful sunshine. The Southwest will see a return of sunshine as well with 60s and 70s.
Any active weather will remain confined to the northern tier with snow showers continuing downwind of the Great Lakes and light snow in the Upper Mississippi Valley ahead of a cold front seeping into the northern Plains. Temperatures in the teens and 20s will encompass the Upper Midwest while unseasonably mild 40s and lower 50s make It into the northern High Plains.
