Strong thunderstorms will once again take aim at the East Coast Friday as a stagnant storm system over the eastern U.S. finally moves on. The Northwest and Midwest will also be stormy while dry conditions prevail elsewhere.
Strong thunderstorms will be ongoing near the Appalachian Mountains Friday morning, and these will move east while producing strong winds, small hail, and heavy rainfall. There is also a tornado threat with these storms, especially in the Chesapeake Bay region, during the late morning into the afternoon hours.
There will be some scattered showers and thunderstorms behind this initial line along the East Coast and into the Ohio river valley and Midwest, but the severe thunderstorm risk will be low with these.
Showers will be present in the northwestern U.S. early Friday as well, mostly in the Cascades as well as in the northern Rockies. By the early afternoon hours, strong thunderstorms will develop in the higher terrain of the Northwest, mainly in Montana and Wyoming, and a few of these may make it as far east as North Dakota before weakening.
The Desert Southwest, the Southern Plains, and the Central Plains will all experience dry weather, with high fire danger expected across the Southwest and Intermountain West.
Temperatures Friday will be below average in the Northwest and in the Mississippi Valley, the Lower Midwest and the Ohio Valley. Above average highs can be expected across the Plains with near average temperatures elsewhere in the U.S. Highs will be in the 60s and 70s for the Pacific Northwest, the Midwest, and the Ohio Valley, with 70s and 80s for the Intermountain West, the Lower Mississippi Valley, the Southeast and the East. Temperatures will rise into the 80s and 90s for the northern Rockies as well as the northern and central Plains, with 90s and 100s for the southern Plains, southern Rockies, and Desert Southwest.
