It will be feeling more like winter than late fall across the entire U.S. by the end of the weekend thanks to a troublesome cold front. The East also must deal with the remnants of Nicole.
Saturday
A cold front will move farther into the eastern U.S. on Saturday, pushing the remnants of Nicole out of the Northeast and into New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. Heavy rain and breezy winds still associated with the remnants will be found across the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast during the morning and afternoon.
Along the cold front, rain and a few thunderstorms will soak the Lower Mississippi Valley, Deep South and Tennessee Valley during the morning, which will spread into the Mid-Atlantic and western portions of the Northeast during the afternoon and evening. Meanwhile, just to the north, snow or a rain/snow mix will be possible in the Mid-Mississippi Valley and Midwest early in the day, pushing into the Ohio Valley later Saturday.
Lake-effect snow will also ramp up across the Great Lakes for the start of the weekend thanks to cold air and strong northwesterly winds.
A Pacific storm system will drift across the Northwest and northern California. Showers will be in the forecast for the lower elevations, while snow falls in the southern Cascades and northern Sierra Nevada.
High pressure will be dominant across southern California into the Southwest, Rockies and Plains, allowing for dry weather.
The north-central U.S. will be quite chilly as temperatures will only be in the single digits and teens! Expect 20s and 30s for the interior Northwest, northern California, the Great Basin, Rockies, central Plains, Upper Mississippi Valley, Great Lakes, Midwest and Ohio Valley. Forties, 50s and lower 60s will be found across the coastal Northwest into California and the Desert Southwest, the southern Plains, Lower Mississippi Valley and interior Northeast. The Southeast, Mid-Atlantic and southern New England will see 60s, 70s and 80s.
Sunday
The stubborn cold front that has brought the East their weather over the past several days will finally move out of the region on Sunday. Showers will be in the forecast from Georgia to Maine during the morning and afternoon, with snowflakes falling in the higher elevations of the Northeast.
At the same time, lake-effect snow will be likely across the Great Lakes, Ohio Valley and western areas of the Northeast throughout the day.
The Pacific storm system in the West will start to slide to the south and east for the conclusion of the weekend. This will bring flurries or very light snow showers to the Great Basin and Four Corners region.
A clipper-type system will drop south across the north-central U.S. Flurries or light snow showers will also be in the forecast for the northern Plains and Upper Mississippi Valley, best chance during the afternoon and evening.
The immediate West Coast along with the central and southern Plains, Lower Mississippi Valley and Midwest will see generally dry, worry-free weather on Sunday.
Expect single digits and teens across the northern Plains again on Sunday. Twenties and 30s are expected for the interior Northwest, Great Basin, northern and central Rockies, central Plains, Upper Midwest, Great Lakes and Ohio Valley. Most of the U.S. will see 40s and 50s, including the Pacific Northwest, California, the southern Rockies, southern Plains, Lower Midwest, Lower Mississippi Valley, Deep South, Northeast, Mid-Atlantic and Southeast. Any 60s will be limited to the Desert Southwest, southern Texas, the Southeast coast and northern Florida, with 70s and 80s in southern Florida.
