The weekend is finally within reach and on top of that, it’s the unofficial start of summer! However, Mother Nature may throw a few wrenches into those Memorial Day weekend plans.
Saturday
Keep on those weather-watching toes and maybe move that picnic indoors. Soggy weather and thunderstorms will drape across the U.S., from the northern and central Rockies all the way through the Mid-Atlantic and southern Northeast. Old-Man Winter will even drop snowflakes in the highest elevations in Wyoming and Colorado. Luckily, a jacket will not be needed as temperatures stay in the upper 70s and lower 80s for those from the central Plains to the Mid-Atlantic and southern Northeast. The cooler air will stick to the Rockies with the 60s at the mountain bases and 30s and 40s in the higher elevations.
Put away the shades and breakout the umbrellas in the northern Plains through the upper Great Lakes. Rain showers might bring more May flowers but will make your Saturday a dreary one. Highs will, fortunately, be comfortable in the low-to-mid 70s.
The southern Plains and lower Mississippi Valley can expect similar sogginess with the potential for strong thunderstorms throughout the day. If spending the dry parts of the day outdoors, be sure to pack sunscreen and plenty of water as highs will flirt with the 100 mark in Texas, with the upper 80s and 90s for the lower Mississippi Valley.
Thanks to a high pressure in the Northeast, northern New England will stay dry and sunny on Saturday. Highs will be perfect for a barbeque outdoors as they reach the upper 60s and low 70s.
The Southeast, with the exception of southern Florida, will stay quiet on Saturday. Keep the A.C. running because the highs will reach into the upper 80s and low 90s. The southern tip of Florida will have loud thunder growls interrupting the first part of the weekend with highs in the 80s.
The Pacific Northwest through the Southwest can expect a lovely Saturday with sunshine and highs in the 70s and 80s. The Southwest will warm up into the mid-to-upper 90s making the need for constant hydration the top of your Saturday “to-do” list.
Sunday
From the northern Plains and down into the Tennessee Valley and Mid-Atlantic, a break from Mother Nature’s soggy agenda will not show up. Thunderstorms are not out of the question especially in the Ohio Valley and the Mid-Atlantic. Highs will reach the 70s for Sunday with the Tennessee Valley seeing the mercury reach into the lower 80s.
The Northeast will have scattered showers on Sunday with highs in the comfortable 60s and 70s.
The soggy weather will also be seen in the southern Plains and lower Mississippi Valley with a chance for a thunderstorm or two. Highs will remain toasty in the 80s and 90s.
The sun’s rays will spread across the central Plains and middle Mississippi Valley making a gorgeous day to get outdoors to do some gardening or cooking on the grill! Highs will also be comfortable in the 70s.
Scattered rain and snow showers will stick to the Rocky Mountain range on Sunday. Highs will reach the 60s and 70s for the lower elevations while the mountain peaks stay in the 30s and 40s.
Sunday on the West Coast will appropriately stay sunny! Highs will reach the 70s in the Pacific Northwest while California, the central Great Basin and the Southwest heat up into the upper 80s and upper 90s. The Desert Southwest will see the 100 mark on their dashboard thermometers.
Memorial Day
Wish all you want, but the rain will not go away. Outdoor plans in many regions in the U.S. will be foiled by Mother Nature’s soggy plans. The Rocky Mountain Spine can expect scattered showers for the lower elevations while the mountain peaks see snowflakes. Highs will reach the 70s in the lower elevations while those higher in the mountains shiver in the chilly 30s.
From the southern Plains into the Mid-Atlantic, the grey sky will drop rain onto those picnic tables. Among the unlucky are those in the northern Plains through the middle Mississippi Valley and through the Northeast. Showers and a thunderstorm or two will slide through, giving those hotdogs on the grill a soggy texture. Highs in the southern Plains through the southern Mid-Atlantic will soar into the mid-to-upper 80s. Cooler temperatures will be found in the northern Plains through the Northeast and northern Mid-Atlantic where the mercury will climb into the upper 60s and mid-to-upper 70s.
Looking for beach weather? Head west! The West Coast can expect sunny skies and highs in the warm 80s and 90s. The Desert Southwest may be a bit too warm to handle as highs reach the upper 90s and low 100s.
