Forecast track for Tropical Storm Fernand
Tropical Storm Fernand has been downgraded into a depression after making landfall in northeastern Mexico. Fernand will still bring deadly downpours and gusty winds to northeastern Mexico and the lower Rio Grande Valley.

As of 4 p.m. CDT, Fernand is located at 24.4 N, 98.3 W, or about 50 miles northwest of La Pesca, Mexico. Maximum sustained winds has decreased to 35 mph and is moving to the west-northwest at 9 mph. The minimum central pressure is 1005 mb, or 29.68 inches of mercury.

Tropical Depression Fernand push further into northern Mexico this evening before diminishing overnight. The Tropical Storm Warning in effect from Puerto Altamira to the Mouth of the Rio Grande River at the U.S./Mexico border has been cancelled.

Heavy rain will be the biggest danger from this tropical system. Between 6 and 12 inches of rain will fall over northeastern Mexico over the next several days, with up to 15 inches of rainfall possible in higher terrain inland. Flash flooding and mudslides are possible.

The outer fringes of this system will spread across the lower Rio Grande Valley, bringing 2 to 4 inches of rain, with isolated amounts up to 6 inches, to extreme southern Texas. This rainfall will be much appreciated as the area has been dry and a few spots are experiencing drought conditions.

In addition to Fernand, Tropical Storm Gabrielle is picking up steam in the eastern Tropical Atlantic. As of 5 p.m. AST, the system was located at 21.0 N, 34.0 W, or about 740 miles west-northwest of the Cabo Verde Islands. Maximum sustained winds are at 50 mph and is moving to the northwest at 9 mph. The minimum central pressure is 1002 mb or 29.59 inches of mercury.

Gabrielle, now the 7th named storm of the Atlantic Hurricane Season, will continue to move northwestward into the north-central Atlantic through early next week. No impact with land is expected.
