Why Do Leaves Change Color in the Fall?

Every fall, trees pull off one of nature’s best costume changes. In just a few weeks or even days, bright green summer trees turn vibrant shades of orange, red and yellow.

But why do leaves change color in the fall? The short answer? It's how trees prepare for winter. Decreasing daylight tells the trees that it's time to stop putting energy into growing bigger and instead focus on storing energy for the coming cold. 


Why do green leaves change color?

Leaves look green during spring and summer because they contain plenty of chlorophyll. This pigment absorbs sunlight and helps trees produce the energy they need to grow.

Chlorophyll does not last forever, so trees continually replace it throughout the growing season. As days become shorter in the fall, deciduous trees begin shutting down food production and stop replacing as much chlorophyll. The green gradually disappears, revealing other pigments that have been inside the leaves all along.


What makes leaves yellow, orange or red?

Different pigments create different fall colors:

  • Yellow and orange come from carotenoids, pigments that are already present in the leaves during summer but are hidden by chlorophyll.

  • Red and purple come from anthocyanins. Some trees produce more of these pigments during fall as sugars become trapped inside their leaves.

  • Brown comes largely from tannins and the remaining leaf tissue after other pigments fade.

Tree species matter too. Maples are known for brilliant reds and oranges, while aspens, birches and some hickories are more likely to turn yellow or gold. That is why two trees on the same street can look completely different.


How does weather affect fall colors?

Shorter days start the process, but the weather helps determine how bright the colors become and how long they last.

The most vibrant displays often follow warm, sunny days and cool nights that remain above freezing. Sunlight helps leaves produce sugar, while cool nights slow the movement of that sugar out of the leaves. That combination can support brighter red and purple pigments.

Weather can also cut the show short:

  • Drought can stress trees, causing leaves to turn brown or fall before reaching full color.

  • Unusually warm weather can slow the transition in healthy trees.

  • An early hard freeze can damage leaves and reduce their color.

  • Strong winds and heavy rain can strip colorful leaves from trees quickly.

This is why peak fall color can arrive at a slightly different time each year, even in the same location.


Does cold weather make leaves change color?

Cold weather plays a role, but it is not the main driver. The steady loss of daylight is what really gets the leaves changing. Temperature, rainfall and tree health then influence the timing and vibrancy of the Fall Color Season.

Latitude and elevation matter as well. Farther north, daylight decreases more quickly during fall. At higher elevations, temperatures tend to cool sooner. Color then spreads south and into lower elevations as the season continues.
