Certain pollen grains look virtually the same under the microscope, even though they were produced by a variety of plants which are very different in appearance. For instance, pollen from members of the Chenopodiaceae and Amaranthaceae families are so similar that they are listed collectively as "chenopods". Goosefoot, russian thistle, and celosia are just three members of these families that look very different from each other.
