Heatwave Peaking In The Eastern U.S.

Most of the eastern half of the country is under heat alerts as temperatures and heat indices push into dangerous levels.

A large ridge of high pressure is nestled over the eastern half of the country and will maintain most of its size and strength through the Fourth of July. As a result, sweltering temperatures will be widespread from the Mississippi Valley to the East Coast over the next few days. Temperatures will peak in the lower 90s to lower 100s, but will feel anywhere from 100 to 110 degrees. Some isolated locations may even reach a heat index of 115 degrees.

Bits of relief during the afternoon hours will come in the form of isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms through the weekend. This activity will focus on the Midwest, Northeast, Tennessee Valley, and Florida. Storm coverage will gradually increase across the Mid-Atlantic Friday through Sunday.

Extreme Heat Warnings and Watches and Heat Advisories cover most of the Mississippi Valley, Great Lakes, Ohio and Tennessee Valleys, Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, and from central North Carolina to western South Carolina and northern Georgia. Much of these will continue through at least Friday or Saturday.

By the holiday weekend, this expansive high pressure system will weaken a smidge, but will stay centered over the Mid-Atlantic. As a result, elevated temperatures and humidity will refuse to budge for many over the Eastern U.S. Even the evening temperatures will still be dangerous for those heading out to barbeques and fireworks.

If you are in one of these areas experiencing unseasonably hot temperatures, it will be important to stay hydrated and cool. Avoid exposure to the sun from late morning into the early evening. Take frequent breaks in the air conditioning or shade. Eat and dress lightly. Use sun protection if outdoors. Never leave kids or pets unattended and remember to “Look Before You Lock!” Recognize the signs of heat-related illness.
