Heavy Rain Deluges East Coast, Western Gulf

Forecasted Weekend Rain Accumulation

Though the Eastern U.S. has found itself beneath an unfavorable and wet weather pattern much of the past week, an even greater rinsing is expected this Memorial Weekend.

A wavering frontal system will hover over both the Atlantic and western Gulf states as a cooler, Canadian air mass battles against a warmer, oceanic air mass. As a result, moisture from the oceanic air mass will continue to be lifted and squeezed out, launching steady and hefty downpours through Memorial Weekend.

Following a drought-riddled year so far across the southern and eastern coastlines, the recent and upcoming rainfall is expected to make great steps toward replenishing soil and revitalizing crops and the wildland. However, the sudden and dramatic increase in the presence of water will end up creating a lot of runoff, and therefore, some flooding.

By the time the clock strikes midnight into Memorial Day, regions such as the Upper Ohio Valley, the Mid-Atlantic, the western Gulf Coast, and the Southeastern Piedmont will likely be drenched in commonplace 1 to 3 inch weekend rain accumulations. Localized tallies of up to five inches or more will also be possible within the southern risk regions.

Currently, Flood Watches are in effect for coastal plains between Louisiana's Vermillion Bay and the Rio Grande River Delta, as well as the middle Ohio Valley from southeastern Indiana to southwestern Pennsylvania.

Low-lying land, urban areas, and locations near bodies of water are most prone to flooding. When faced with submerged roadways, remember, "Turn Around, Don't Drown!"

The best way to remain safe is to stay prepared and informed about your local weather. Have a severe weather kit packed with a battery-operated radio, water, and non-perishable food items. Also, check the WeatherBug app frequently for any updates on today's severe weather. Remember, "When Thunder Roars, Go Indoors!"
