Intense heat will persist across portions of the Northwest and West through mid-week.
High pressure will continue to produce the intense heat across interior portions of the Northwest today. High temperatures will soar through the 90s and approach 100 degrees in many locations.
In fact, a couple of record high temperatures will be challenged today. In Spokane, Wash., the record of 96 degrees set in 1922 will be challenged today. In Yakima, Wash., the record of 97 degrees set in 2011 will also be challenged today.
Numerous Extreme Heat Warnings and Heat Advisories can be found across northern Oregon through central and eastern Washington and northwestern Idaho.
In addition to the Northwest, high temperatures will climb through the 90s and peak around 100 degrees throughout the San Joaquin Valley this afternoon.
Temperatures will only cool down slightly on Wednesday across the Northwest and West. Widespread high temperatures in the 90s will still be common from California's San Joaquin Valley through the interior Northwest.
Fortunately for some, temporary relief will be felt since scattered showers and thunderstorms are forecast to develop during the afternoon and evening hours. The flipside to that is lightning strikes igniting fires in the driest areas. There are also Flash Flood Watches for parts of Nevada into southeastern Oregon and southwestern Idaho.
If you must go outdoors, prepare by staying hydrated and keep a watchful eye for any signs of heat-related illnesses such as heat stroke and heat exhaustion. Wear the right clothing, such as loose-fitting, lightweight and breathable fabrics, and take many breaks within a cool and shaded area.
Make sure to take extra precautions for children and the elderly as they are more susceptible to heat-related illness. Never leave children or animals alone in a locked vehicle as it can become dangerous and potentially fatal.
