Severe Storms Target the Ohio Valley

The calendar may still say February, but spring-like thunderstorms are set to rumble across the Ohio Valley today.

An unseasonably mild and humid air mass has settled across the Mississippi and Ohio valleys. This is thanks in part to a nearly stationary front just south of the Great Lakes that is helping to keep some colder air in check. At the same time, an area of low pressure is expected to move along this front this afternoon and evening and will bring even more warm and humid air northward into the Ohio Valley today.

With the low pressure system bringing with it some strong winds aloft, the ingredients are in place for strong to severe thunderstorms to develop this afternoon.

As a result, the government's Storm Prediction Center has issued a Slight Risk, or a 2 out of 5 on the severe weather probability scale, across portions of Illinois, northern Kentucky, Indiana, and southwestern Ohio.

All modes of severe weather are possible today, which includes damaging wind gusts, large hail, and even a few tornadoes. A few cities at risk for severe weather today include Indianapolis, Cincinnati, and Louisville, Ky.

Make sure to know the difference between a watch and a warning should they be issued. A “watch” means that conditions are favorable for severe weather to occur and to be on alert for any rapidly changing conditions. A “warning” means that severe weather is imminent, and you should act fast to remain safe.

The best way to remain safe is to stay prepared and informed about your local weather. Have a severe weather kit packed with a battery-operated radio, water, and non-perishable food items. Also, check the WeatherBug app frequently for any updates on today's severe weather. Remember, "When Thunder Roars, Go Indoors!"
