An impactful winter storm will wrap up tonight across Virginia and North Carolina, leaving a trail of significant snowfall from Kentucky to the Mid-Atlantic and Carolinas.
A fast-moving area of low pressure has teamed up with cold, sub-freezing air and plentiful moisture to squeeze out several inches of snow from Kentucky and West Virginia to Virginia and Appalachia in western North Carolina. Much of southern Virginia got into the wintry weather as well.
Winter Weather Advisories and Winter Storm Warnings are in effect from southeastern West Virginia to southern Virginia and northern North Carolina tonight. Beckley, W. Va., Roanoke, Richmond, and Virginia Beach, Va., and Raleigh-Durham, N.C., are included in the winter-related advisories.
Snow-covered roads will lead to slippery travel, particularly along parts of Interstates 64, 66, 81, and 95 in the Mid-Atlantic and western and northern North Carolina.
The storm so far has produced impressive totals in and surrounding the Richmond, Va., metro area today with widespread 3 to 4 inches of snow being reported. Near Petersburg, Va., 6.2 inches of snow has fallen, with residents in Bon Air, Va., digging out from 4.3 inches of freshly fallen snow. Farther west, Shady Springs, W. Va., picked up 7 inches, while Danville and Charleston, W. Va., measured between 6 and 7 inches of snow, respectively. Two to 4 inches fell near the West Virginia-Kentucky border as well.
