Strong Storms And Downpours Hit The Mid-Atlantic, Ohio Valley

Rain and thunderstorms will continue to form along two fronts from the Ohio Valley into the southern Mid-Atlantic today, with some severe storms and localized heavy rain possible.

Showers and embedded storms already occupy parts of the Ohio Valley and Mid-Atlantic, but as instability increases as the day goes on, storm coverage will increase. The more robust storms will be capable of producing gusty winds and hail.

The Storm Prediction Center has issued Marginal and Slight Risks (levels 1 and 2 out of 5) covering much of the eastern Ohio Valley and southern Mid-Atlantic for this afternoon and evening. Northern and eastern Virginia, southern Maryland, central West Virginia, and southeastern Ohio have the best chance for strong to severe storms.

Storms could also contain heavy downpours this afternoon and evening, with rain amounts of 1 to 2 inches possible. There could even be localized rainfall of 2 to 3 inches from southeastern Indiana to southern Ohio, northern Kentucky, most of West Virginia, and western Maryland today. These areas are under a Flash Flood Watch through tonight. If you do approach a flooded roadway, remember that it is always best to "Turn Around, Don’t Drown!"
