Thunderstorms to Rumble Over the Delmarva Peninsula, Virginia, North Carolina Today

Thunderstorms, some which may be strong to severe, will be found across the southern Delmarva Peninsula as well as eastern Virginia and northeastern North Carolina today.

A slow-moving cold front will slowly sag into the Mid-Atlantic and North Carolina today, bringing with it scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms. Some of the thunderstorms will have the potential to produce heavy downpours and damaging wind gusts of up to 40-50 mph.

The government's Storm Prediction Center has issued a Slight Risk (level 2 out of 5) for the southern portion of the Delmarva Peninsula, a large portion of eastern Virginia and a sliver of northeastern North Carolina. Cities under this risk include Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Richmond and Newport News, all of which are in Virginia.

Flood Watches are in effect across portions of the southern Delmarva Peninsula, southern and central Virginia, a small section of northwestern North Carolina and a large swatch of eastern and central Tennessee. Rain amounts of 1 to 2 inches will be common, with some locally higher amounts up to 3 to 4 inches. Remember when a roadway is flooded, "Turn Around, Don't Drown!".

Make sure to know the difference between a watch and a warning should they be issued. A "watch" means that conditions are favorable for severe weather to occur, and to be on alert for any rapidly changing conditions. A "warning" means that severe weather is imminent, and you should act fast to remain safe.
