El Niño Winter 2026–2027 What It Could Mean for the US

On June 11, something that had been building beneath the Pacific Ocean finally reached the atmosphere.

For months, waters along the equatorial Pacific had been growing warmer. By June, the atmosphere had begun responding too, with changes in winds, rainfall and tropical thunderstorms.

El Niño had officially arrived.

Now it is getting stronger. NOAA says there is a greater than 90% chance this becomes a very strong El Niño during fall and winter 2026–2027. There is also a 75% chance it becomes a historic event, exceeding the strength of every El Niño recorded since 1950.

This El Niño is expected to continue strengthening through the end of the year, right when it usually has its greatest influence on weather across the United States.

In other words, its biggest effects may still be ahead of us.

El Niño Winter Outlook at a Glance

A typical El Niño winter favors:

  • Warmer and drier conditions across the Pacific Northwest and parts of the northern U.S.

  • Warmer conditions and less snow overall around the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley

  • A wetter, more active storm track across the southern U.S.

  • A less predictable mix across the Northeast

These are seasonal tendencies, not guarantees. El Niño loads the dice, but it does not control every storm.


What Is El Niño?

El Niño and La Niña are opposite phases of a larger climate pattern called the El Niño-Southern Oscillation.

During La Niña, parts of the equatorial Pacific become cooler than average. During El Niño, they become warmer.

But El Niño is not simply a warm patch of water sitting thousands of miles away.

As that warm water shifts east, tropical thunderstorms and rainfall move with it. That changes where heat enters the atmosphere and can rearrange the jet streams that guide storms across North America.

Think of the jet stream as an atmospheric highway. When that highway shifts, storms, cold air and moisture can start taking different routes.


Pacific Northwest and Northern Plains: Warmer and Drier

The polar jet stream normally dips south at times during winter, carrying storms and bursts of Arctic air into the United States.

During many El Niño winters, that jet stream spends more time farther north. This can limit how often cold air and Pacific storms reach the Northwest, northern Rockies and northern Plains.

The result often leans warmer and drier than average, with fewer opportunities for widespread low-elevation snow.

That does not mean every mountain will have a snowless winter or that cold air will disappear. Individual storms can still bring heavy snow. They may simply happen less often.

Great Lakes and Ohio Valley: Less Snow Overall

Around the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley, El Niño winters often lean warmer and drier.

That can mean fewer opportunities for large, widespread snowstorms and more precipitation falling as rain instead of snow.

Lake-effect snow can still complicate the picture. Cold air passing over relatively warm, open water can produce intense snow bands even during an otherwise mild winter. One town could get buried while another location a short drive away sees very little.

The seasonal trend may favor less snow overall, but it does not eliminate the possibility of a few memorable storms.


Northeast: A Much Messier Signal

The Northeast is where the El Niño winter pattern becomes less straightforward.

Temperatures can lean warmer during moderate and strong El Niño winters, especially across the northern part of the region. Precipitation and snowfall are less consistent.

The exact storm track matters enormously. A storm traveling along the coast could produce heavy snow inland, rain near the shoreline or a messy combination of both.

Other weather patterns over the Arctic and North Atlantic can also temporarily overwhelm El Niño’s influence.

For the Northeast, El Niño provides context, but not a reliable snow-total forecast months in advance.


South and Southwest: Wetter and Stormier

The southern half of the country often sees the biggest change during an El Niño winter.

A stronger subtropical jet stream can act like a conveyor belt, carrying Pacific moisture and repeated storm systems from California and the Southwest through Texas, the Gulf Coast and Southeast.

That often makes the southern tier wetter and somewhat cooler than average.

For drought-stricken areas, that rain could be welcome. But drought and flooding can exist uncomfortably close together. Dry or compacted ground may struggle to absorb sudden heavy rain, increasing runoff before meaningful drought relief arrives.

A wetter winter can also increase the number of strong storm systems moving across the South. Whether those storms produce heavy rain, severe weather, ice or snow depends on whether enough cold air is available at the same time.


Does El Niño Mean More Snow in the South?

Not automatically.

El Niño can supply the moisture and storm track needed for unusual Southern snow or ice. It cannot guarantee the cold air.

If Arctic air is already in place when one of those moisture-rich storms arrives, parts of Texas, the Gulf Coast or the Southeast could see wintry weather. If temperatures remain too warm, the same system may produce only heavy rain.

That timing is nearly impossible to predict months ahead.


Does El Niño Mean a Snowless Winter Elsewhere?

Also no.

A seasonal outlook describes what is more likely across several months. It does not mean every week will follow the same pattern.

A warmer-than-average winter can still include a bitter cold snap. A drier-than-average winter can still produce a major snowstorm. One storm can also account for a large percentage of a city’s entire seasonal snowfall.

El Niño changes the odds. It does not write the daily forecast.


El Niño Loads the Dice

This El Niño is expected to continue strengthening through the end of 2026, with its peak likely arriving during late fall or early winter.

A stronger event increases the chances of seeing familiar El Niño patterns, but those effects are not guaranteed or perfectly proportional to the temperature of the Pacific Ocean.

Shorter-term patterns over the Arctic and Atlantic, the location of individual storms and the availability of cold air will still matter.

That is why El Niño cannot tell us exactly how much snow your town will receive. What it can tell us is that the atmospheric highways are being rearranged, and this winter may take a very different route.
